LULA DAWSON BLILEY'S 1902 TRAVEL JOURNAL TO CALIFORNIA

Born: Corry, Pennsylvania
Buried: Erie, Pennsylvania

1902 CALIFORNIA TRAVEL JOURNAL

Introduction (Revised: Dec. 6, 2020, with assets for research purposes)

BOOK

Lula went to California in 1902 for an extended trip with her grandmother for which she created an extended journal of over 20,000 words. I have scanned the journal and am preparing some background material to complement her original work and the transcription work by her daughter and son-in-law in 1942. In the meantime, here are links to a PDF of the 1942 journal and an online Web gallery.

Journal Clipping To the left is a clipping of the bottom of the last page of her journal, as she amended it in the early 1940s when it was typed up. It provides a sample of her handwriting at the age of approximately 55 years.

Her Travel Outfit—From Journal

This photo shows what she wore and looked like in 1902 at the age of 27 as she headed out West to California with her grandmother on a five month trip. Most of the trip was by train.

Click here for full-sized view, or here for a detail of her face in a new window.

The photo was found at the end of the 80-page travel journal she wrote about this trip. There are no other photos of her or those she visited on that trip. Too bad!

However, she did put together a magnificent family photo album in the early 1930s. (Look below.)

LULA'S FAMILY PHOTO ALBUM

Lula was very interested in family history and heritage. Another section of this site is devoted to a 52 page album that contains 75 photographs from 1860 to 1931. Click here to view this wonderful family heirloom online.
